Lizzie, who happened to be the Salisbury's one servant at the time, was wasteful. It was almost her only fault, in Mrs. Salisbury's eyes, for such trifles as her habit of becoming excited and "saucy," in moments of domestic stress, or to ask boldly for other holidays than her alternate Sunday and Thursday afternoons, or to resent at all times the intrusion of any person, even her mistress, into her immaculate kitchen, might have been overlooked. Mrs. Salisbury had been keeping house in a suburban town for twenty years; she was not considered an exacting mistress.

Kathleen Norris lived and wrote in a time when many families hired a maid. It was her belief that women treated their servants badly, and did not respect them as individuals capable of independent decisions, with lives of their own. She mentions this in passing in several of her novels, but only in this brief work does she really set out her view in detail. "The Treasure" is a maid, trained by a school of house management the way a person would be trained in any other craft, and respecting herself and her capabilities. While she is clearly a treasure and the family in general is warmly appreciative of her work, the mother of the family finds her capabilities threatening, and is unable to visualize a maid - a servant - who is more capable than she is. This is not a novel as much as it is a social commentary, but because the problem it deals with is rarely experienced in our current US society, it is a period piece. That said, there is a piece of this that lines right up with contemporary works like "The Nanny Diaries", where women are torn between the wish for capable hired help, and the threat that they feel when their staff is more capable than they are. In other times and places where servants are more common, this book may still be a timely read. Note that the characters are all white - this is not a book about racial issues.

I had to laugh, but it was sad as well. Justine WAS a treasure, but Sally was a spoiled, selfish woman. She didn't need a maid, but was content to be useless. She resented Justine for being good at the job. Tragic.
"The Treasure" made me realize how each person is valuable, even those we think are not up to our standards. Each of us has something to offer this world and to make a difference. There are heros among us.
